Lyrics

A valiant young soldier was turned to a Stoneman by a beautiful sorceress on the first day of May,
Wounded in battle he fell from the saddle and sank into the mud and the clay,
He was placed in a cavern in the depth of the mountains and slept as the ages passed away,
Forests grew tall and rivers etched canyons inch by inch through the passage of days,
Stoneman lay peacefully, blissfully waiting for the sorceress to release him once more,
Into the arms of the ghost of Melissa rising from the far river shore

The Stoneman lay dreamless beyond the abyss of the human existence of sorrows and joys,
Funerals, marriages, babies in carriages all passed by unnoticed in his tomb deep and strange,
The days turned to years his tears and his fears receded to numbness in his endless night,
Stoneman dreamed vividly sleeping patiently praying endlessly for something to change,
Stoneman lay peacefully, blissfully waiting for the kiss of a princess to wake him again,
To shatter the stone surrounding his heart to open his eyes and relieve the pain

A beautiful princess stumbling through the forest entered the cavern where Stoneman lay,
Struggling to decide to run or to hide or she bestowed her warm kiss on cold lips of clay,
She held him in her arms, he opened his eyes, she took his cold hands in her strong embrace,
Like stories of old the glories foretold came to pass she led him out of that place,
The valiant young solder became flesh and blood fully alive as he was before,
The Princess took Stoneman over the river into the fields the far distant shore

With new eyes the Stoneman looked at the faces of everyone he saw,
The Princesses' devotion provided the potion to heal his heart still so raw,
Alive for the first time in years, the scars fading replacing his fears,
With joy he cried rivers of tears
For the wasted chances, the wasted love, the wasted struggles, the wasted years

The end of this story has not yet been written did they become lovers of simply stay friends?
It didn’t matter the stone remained shattered the Stoneman would never go back again,
To the lonely cavern so deep he’d never go back to sleep,
For the first time he was truly alive he knew that he would survive,
The wasted chances, the wasted love, the wasted struggles, the wasted year

Was she a Princess or only a Sorceress waving her wand his trust to keep?
The Stoneman turned back into a valiant young soldier,
As the ghost of Melissa returned to the deep
